AI Agents for Finance Teams: What They Do and Who Makes Them
Last updated
The short answer
AI agents for finance teams are software that carries out a finance task end to end, such as matching transactions, preparing a reconciliation, coding an invoice or chasing a payment, and hands a person the exceptions and the evidence rather than the whole job. The main vendors split three ways: close and reconciliation platforms (BlackLine, FloQast, Trintech, Numeric), order-to-cash and AP specialists (HighRadius, Vic.ai), and spend platforms (Ramp). The right choice depends less on the AI than on which workflow costs you most and which systems it has to work across.

What a finance AI agent does
Earlier finance automation followed fixed rules: if the amount and reference match, clear the item. An agent handles the cases rules cannot, by reading supporting documents, proposing a match or a journal, explaining why, and escalating what it is unsure about. The useful ones work inside approval limits and leave an audit trail, because finance output has to survive an audit.
- Close and reconciliation: match bank and ledger transactions, prepare reconciliations with the evidence attached, draft accruals and explain variances.
- Accounts payable: read invoices, code them to the general ledger, check for duplicates and fraud signals, and route approvals.
- Order-to-cash: apply cash to open invoices, prioritise collections and chase customers.
- Spend and procurement: code card transactions, enforce policy and run vendor checks.
The main vendors compared
Facts below come from each vendor's own announcements and filings, checked on 22 October 2026. Agent names are the vendors' own. New Odyssey makes the Pegasus Finance Agent, the last row.

How to choose
- Start from the workflow, not the vendor. If reconciliations are the bottleneck, compare close platforms; if invoices are, compare AP tools. A platform strong in one area is often average in another.
- Check where the agent runs. Close platforms bring their own workspace and expect your team to move into it. Agents like Pegasus work across the systems you already have, which matters when the work spans the ERP, the bank, email and spreadsheets.
- Ask what the agent may do on its own. Look for approval thresholds, segregation of duties, and a log of every decision an auditor can follow.
- Ask for evidence on your own data. Vendor accuracy and time-saved figures come from their best customers. A pilot on a month of your own transactions is the only number that counts.
- Agree the measure before you start: days to close, unmatched items, invoices touched by hand, or hours per month. Gartner's 2026 survey found 63% of finance organisations' AI rollouts ran slower than expected; a fixed baseline is how you tell whether yours is working.
When an agent is the wrong answer
If the close is slow because the chart of accounts is a mess, ownership of reconciliations is unclear, or source data arrives late, an agent will produce exceptions faster rather than fewer. Fix the process and data first. An assessment of one workflow usually shows which kind of problem you have.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the difference between finance automation and a finance AI agent?
- Rule-based automation follows fixed instructions and stops when an item does not fit. An AI agent can interpret documents, propose an action such as a match or a journal entry, explain it, and route the uncertain cases to a person. Most finance teams use both: rules for the predictable volume and agents for the exceptions.
- Can AI agents do the month-end close on their own?
- Not responsibly, and no major vendor claims they should. Agents can prepare reconciliations, draft accruals and explain variances, but a person still reviews and signs off. The realistic goal is fewer manual steps and fewer late surprises, with a controller approving the result.
- Are AI agents safe for audited financial processes?
- They can be if every action is logged, approval limits are enforced, and the person who prepares an entry is not the one who approves it. Ask any vendor to show the audit trail for a single decision before you buy.
- How much do finance AI agents cost?
- Most vendors do not publish prices. Pricing models vary: per user, per transaction, platform fee plus usage, or a share of savings. Ramp is an exception and lists its plans publicly. New Odyssey quotes the Pegasus Finance Agent after a fixed-fee assessment of the workflow.
